Zimbabwe to face Namibia in battle for Rugby World Cup 2027 slot

KAMPALA, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwe and Namibia will meet in the Rugby Africa Cup final, which will also determine which team earns direct qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Namibia defeated Algeria 21-7 on Sunday to secure their place in the final, while Zimbabwe edged Kenya 29-23 at Mandela National Stadium in Kampala.

In the opening semifinal, Namibia dominated possession and territory against Algeria, with fly half Ian Prior playing a pivotal role as they target an eighth World Cup appearance.

In the second semifinal, the Zimbabwe Sables trailed Kenya 18-13 at halftime but rallied in the second half to score 16 points and claim victory.

"This is a very sweet win because we defeated a strong team and we get to the final with a chance to retain our title and also qualify for the World Cup," said Zimbabwe's back-row Dylan Utete.

Namibia and Zimbabwe will now face off in the final on July 19. The winner will qualify directly for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, while the runner-up will enter a repechage tournament with teams from outside Africa.

Also on Sunday, Morocco's Atlas Lions stunned hosts Uganda 24-12 to advance to the fifth-place playoff, where they will meet Senegal. Senegal earlier defeated Cote d'Ivoire 28-3.
