A Verulam tavern owner has been stabbed to death in the Cottonlands area, north of Durban, police said on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the 50-year-old man's body was discovered "with multiple stab wounds".

"He was declared dead at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated."

News24 understands the victim operated Jo's Tavern from his residence for a number of years.
