Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa also said there was a heavy police presence along Maroela and Old Paarl Roads in Kraaifontein, where the City of Cape Town's law enforcement officials were demolishing structures on a piece of land in Bloekombos.

"During the demolition of structures by law enforcement officials, tyres were burnt and police pelted with stones," she said.

Nine people were arrested and police would continue to monitor the situation.

Earlier, the Western Cape Human Settlements MEC, Tertius Simmers, said it had cost the department R18 million over the past month to prevent the illegal occupation of housing units and vacant land earmarked for development.

Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz also expressed concern over the ongoing protests in St Helena Bay.
