SAFA confirm Bafana Bafana to play Zambia

21 Aug 2019, 22:13 GMT+10

Cape Town - Bafana Bafana will play Zambia at the Nkoloma Stadium in an international friendly next month, the South African Football Association (SAFA) confirmed.

That match will take place on Saturday, September 7 and kick-off is at 15:00 (SA time).

SAFA acting CEO, Russell Paul, confirmed that the two countries sealed an agreement regarding the upcoming friendly earlier this week.

The fixture will be the first for South Africa following the departure of coach Stuart Baxter following his shock resignation after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Bafana Bafana reached the quarter-finals in Egypt with the highlight being a 1-0 win over the host nation in the last 16 encounter at Cairo International Stadium.

It will also be interim coach Molefi Ntseki's first game in charge and he is expected to announce his 23-man squad for the clash next week.

The match against Zambia will be part of the preparations for the 2021 AFCON qualifiers which commences in November.

South Africa are in Group C along with Ghana, Sudan and the winner of the preliminary round encounter between Mauritius and Sao Tome e Principe.

The next AFCON is scheduled for Cameroon in 2021 and two teams from each group will qualify for the continent's premier tournament.
