WASHINGTON DC – U.S. President Donald Trump has continued his personal attacks on French President Emmanuel Macron despite saying the pair had had a reconciliation during his visit to Paris on the weekend.

"The problem is that Emmanuel suffers from a very low Approval Rating in France, 26%, and an unemployment rate of almost 10%," Trump posted on Twitter. "He was just trying to get onto another subject. By the way, there is no country more Nationalist than France, very proud people-and rightfully so!"

"MAKE FRANCE GREAT AGAIN!" the U.S. president added.

Trump was responding to a speech given by Macron on the weekend in which the French president spoke against nationalism.

During his speech, Macron criticised countries who put "our interests first," and said "our demons are resurfacing" just as the world is commemorating the 100 year anniversary of the end of World War I.

Earlier in the week Macron told French radio, "We have to protect ourselves with respect to China, Russia and even the United States of America."

He also said France needed to share with other countries the burden of maintaining forces like NATO.

He was critical of Trump's decision to withdraw from a 1987 nuclear missile treaty with Russia that had been negotiated by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev..

Trump described Macron's comments as "very insulting," in a tweet he posted just as Air Force One was arriving in France.

On Tuesday he was back on Twitter embellishing his recent remarks.

"Emmanuel Macron suggests building its own army to protect Europe against the U.S., China and Russia. But it was Germany in World Wars One & Two - How did that work out for France?" he asked.

"They were starting to learn German in Paris before the U.S. came along. Pay for NATO or not!" the president tweeted.
