Detroit workers learn new skills

South Africa News.Net
Tuesday 4th August, 2009

Laid off auto workers in Detroit, Michigan are learning how to install alternative energy sources as an alternative to their old jobs.

In new technology programs the Henry Ford College is helping retrain the hundreds of thousands of people affected by the collapse in the car industry.

Workers are mostly expecting to put their new training to use at some of the many factories which have been constructed to build wind turbines or solar panels.

Tuition for the hopeful workers is being paid through a state program which provides scholarships to Michigan residents who are unemployed or earning less than $40,000 a year.
